Caption: "50 years ago... Seen here in the 1930's, the old Boston Arena was the premier indoor sports facility in the city, hosting hockey games, boxing matches, rodeos, circuses and political rallies. After decades of decline, the arena was purchased by Northeastern University in 1979 and renamed in honor of George J. and Hope M. Matthews. Part of the building's original facade, discovered almost intact under layers of earlier renovations, has been preserved and integrated into the design of the new entrance."
